Cooking with Codex: Schnirkel

We didn't celebrate this year because I had decided to come down with the Rhinoceros cold not meant for smaller mammals like myself. Either that or it was Covshhh (we must pretend it doesn't exist because it's bad for the economy.) Weeks of misery, no appetite,  splitting headaches (I know where all of my sinuses are now) and just when all the symptoms stopped I managed a new one; coughing fits so severe that it made my stomach cramp. Anyone else have this or know what this thing was that's going around the globe because people aren't masking?

Spouse did a mini Thanksgiving and bought some turkey breasts and thigh quarters, with mashed potatoes. I mean she cooked both. I don't like tea anymore.

I made Schnirkel sandwiches the next day. At least that's what I call them now.

"You mean Schnitzel?" spouse asked watching me.

No. Schnitzel turkey. Schnirkel.

That would be Turkey Schnitzel. You forgot the breadcrumbs.

No I did not. They'll irritate my throat and then I can't eat my Schnirkel.

The Schnirkel sandwich consists of herbed butter, a little lemon juice and sliced tomato. The Schnirkel goes inside the sandwich as well. Somewhere. It's quite good unless one wants taste to taste like taste after the great Rhino cold of 25'.

I'm pretty certain it's long Rhino Covsshh, since I'm not making a lot of sense and am going back to bed, after I eat my tasteless Schnirkel.

Happy belated Thanksgiving, everyone.

  2. All the best. I suppose covsshh tests are illegal in your part of the world by now?

    1. Codex: I was negative, but if the test isn't up to date, it can be inaccurate. I don't get colds like this.
Were you negative? How did you get over yours?

    2. Still working on recovery, mostly tired, some headache and facial nerve tingling. I had two negative tests at home and one negative PCR tests at my GP's surgery.
No Covid as yet, I have had seven Covid vaccine shots to date and have been exposed to infected people - unknowingly - several times without getting it. Any day now . . .

    3. Codex: @Sabine let's not go there. You're doing what you can so far knock on wood.

There are RSV pcr tests. The fatigue is something else though. I mean in terms of consuming food or taking anything? Does anything work?

  3. So far neither of us have had the dreaded C----. Been a couple of years since I got a booster but I did get the latest one. Are you sure it wasn't just your run of the mill flu? Or maybe RSV? I hear that one is bad too.

Sorry you aren't feeling well and I hope your immune system kicks its butt forthwith.

  4. Codex: definitely not flu. (Flu always comes with joint pain no matter the age group). RSV probably but never had this and never this long. Play on words there is a Rhinovirus as well.

Thank you Ellen. Fingers crossed you don't get it.

  5. So sorry you’ve been feeling poorly. Whatever plague you have caught I hope it leaves you alone soon. I have yet to catch this season’s illness de jour. I’ve been visiting my dad in hospital the last couple weeks and basically spraying myself down with hand sanitizer when exiting the hospital in hopes no dastardly bugs will cling to me on the way out. (Hospital elevator buttons make me shudder.) Time will tell if I should have masked too. Hopefully you will be fully tasting your schnirkel sandwiches again soon. The lemon juice is a nice touch.

    1. Codex: Marly, it's unsolicited advice. Mask. It reduces the risk by 30%. That's a lot. Use your elbow for buttons they are a petri dish. Depends on the hand sanitizer, some evaporate too quickly. Whatever is going round is fairly contagious. I know when I got it. Thank you for the well wishes.

I'm sorry to hear that. How is he doing? It's weird that you mention your dad. I was making myself laugh with this post yesterday, woke up crying out of nowhere thinking about mine.

You don't have a blog do you?

    2. It’s not really crying out of no where. Grief sneaks up and bubbles over. From the bits you have shared about your dad it sounds like he was a good man.

Thank you for the masking advice. I will remember the 30% stat.

Dad got home from the hospital today. He has dementia and some other health problems. We’re just trying to keep him in his home with my mom for as long as possible. A tricky balance and worrisome.

      I don’t have a blog. I’m so glad other’s do.

    3. Codex: Yes. It does. Talking about it makes it worse, not talking about is not good either. He was exceptional. Might do a tribute. Don't know.

Been there. I hope you have home care and good help. Do you at least have siblings to share the burden with?

    4. Yes, home care and my brother does a lot.
Hope you feel better soon. :)

    5. Codex: I apologize. I think you mentioned it before. Good that you have consistent help.

  6. Covshhh, lol. Unlike the rest of Canada, our provincial government tried to charge us for Covshhh boosters, but our local health staff simply showed those interested a list of health conditions that indicate fee exemption, and then added with a a very professional smile,"no need to tell us which condition, just yes or no." Lol.

    1. Codex: Love the passive aggressiveness of the work around. Clever.
Heard Alberta wants to offer private health care, because there isn't a doctor shortage already.
